Sandy Gutner is Awarded Consultant of the Year for 2012 by the  American Public Works  Association South Florida Branch

This prestigious award recognizes the exemplary work done by Sandy Gutner and Value Added Consulting in 2012. Sandy and the team of Value Added Consulting has been able to save millions of dollars to municipalities and improve operations for cities and counties nationwide.  Sandy Gutner is a sought-after trusted advisor who is known to provide the optimal solution no matter the size of the project.

One of the highest profile projects of 2012 was the City of Miramar where the projected savings is over $7.5 million within the first five years.  Sandy was able to help the City realize these savings by seeing the risks in a 20 year renewal contract.  Instead, the City sought competitive bids and alternative options saving nearly 30% in tipping fees alone.

The American Public Works Association (APWA) serves professionals in all aspects of public works—a fact that sets it apart from other organizations and makes it an effective voice of public works throughout North America. With a worldwide membership over 28,000 strong, APWA includes not only personnel from local, county, state/province, and federal agencies, but also private sector personnel who supply products and services to those professionals.

Congratulations to Sandy for receiving The Consultant of the Year Award!

Miramar to save $7.5M over 5 years

By electing not to accept a $750K signing bonus in return for committing an additional 20 years to the incumbent disposal provider, Miramar, Fl projects savings of more than $7.5M in the first 5 years of its new disposal contract. The incumbent, Wheelabrator Technologies offered cities in Broward County a $12M signing bonus (prorated by tonnage) if they would agree to an extension of 10 years with an additional 10-year renewal option. Unfortunately, the agreement included many risks and uncertainties and was projected to come with a tipping fee of at least $65.19 per ton.

Believing no other options existed many cities accepted the deal. Based on the analysis and recommendation of Value Added Consulting, Miramar bucked the conventional wisdom and sought competitive bids. On November 20, 2012, the City Commission ranked joint venture firm Sun/Bergeron’s proposal number one, with a proposed net cost of $43.75 per ton.

Miramar Passes on $750k Signing Bonus!
In these tough economic times, foregoing a $750k one-time payment is big news. But the Commissioners of Miramar realized that the stakes are high and that there was much more to the story. Miramar Public Works Director, Tom Good has been following this issue very closely and has a thorough understanding of the issues. Engaging the services of Value Added Consulting, LLC to conduct a detailed assessment of the risks and uncertainties of the proposed approach led the Miramar Commission to seek out alternative disposal options.
